Bringing Mistletoe home

Wednesday 7 August 2013

On Monday the 29th of July Whittle Marine headed down to Cornwall to collect X1 from Falmouth. The journey down was beautiful and sunny and we made good time getting to Falmouth around 8Pm.

At 7Am we were up and off to collect Mistletoe the first X ever built.

In 1909, the Motor Yacht Club (MYC, now Royal MYC) commissioned Alfred Westmacott to design a one-design keelboat class. The first boat was Mistletoe built by Woodnutts on the Isle of Wight; an attractive, seaworthy boat suitable for the tidal waters of the solent.

It seemed only fitting that we were going to collect Mistletoe and bring her back to the Isle of Wight where she was built. Until now Mistletoe had been on show for years at the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall.

Mistletoe was hoisted by cradle onto a specially designed X boat trailor and then tied down carefully and secured.

For the journey back to the island she was also shrink wrapped to keep her dry and clean.

Where we left the day before in beautiful sunshine, the morning journey back wasn’t so blessed with the weather and the rain came down for mistletoe’s departure.

Journeying back towards the island Whittle Marine felt very proud to have been a part of Mistletoe’s return back to home soil.

Getting onto the boat and trailing her over to Cowes went smoothly and we arrived at Cowes Classic Boat Museum and dropped her off in the hands of the Museum staff. A good jorney and a joy to be part of such an important piece of X Boat history!

Thanks to Wightlink for our sponsored ticket to collect X One, and also just fitting us on the boat!

Mistletoe will now be on view at the Cowes Boat Museum, take a look at their website and how to get there to see Mistletoe below.

Many thanks to all involved!
